    Oxymetholone  is a 17-alpha-alkylated oral anabolic-androgenic steroid. Oxymetholone is very effective in promoting muscle gains and has an excellent myotrophic activity index of 3.2 and is similar to testosterone with an androgenic activity index of 0.45. Main clinical uses include: osteoporosis, anemia, as well as stimulating muscle growth in undernourished or underdeveloped patients. Also, oxymetholone has been studied for the treatment of HIV-associated wasting, antithrombin III deficiency, pediatric growth impairment, and damaged myocardium, with varying degrees of success.


    Dosage and administration:

    The daily adult dosage is 5 mg to 20 mg given in 2 divided doses.  Because Oximetholone actively promote erythropoiesis blood indexes like RBC, Hb and hematocrit have to be carefully monitored for possible development of policythemia.


    Adverse reactions:

    The same as all 17alkylated alkylated steroids, oxymetholone is hepatotoxic and therefore its use should be intermittent. Main adverse reactions reported with oxymethalone are hepatic cholestasis, polycythemia, water retention, and rise in the liver enzymes values  SGOT, SGPT which normalize after withdrawal.


    Contraindications:

    Known or suspected carcinoma of the prostate or the male breast.

    Pregnancy, because of possible masculinization of the fetus. Nephrosis, the nephrotic phase of nephritis,
    hypercalcemia, polycythemia.
